- Baby quilt (36" × 54") — 1.5–2 yards of top fabric; 1.75 yards of backing
- Throw quilt (50" × 65") — 3–4 yards of top fabric; 3.5 yards of backing
- Twin quilt (60" × 80") — 4–5 yards of top fabric; 5 yards of backing
- Full/Queen quilt (80" × 90") — 6–8 yards of top fabric; 7.5 yards of backing

How to Calculate Fabric for a Patchwork Pattern

- Add 10% for waste.
For example, a quilt using 5" squares across a 60" × 80" top needs roughly 192 squares. If you're splitting that across 6 fabrics, you need about 32 squares per fabric — or just under 0.5 yards each.
Don't Forget the Binding
Binding is easy to overlook. For most quilts, plan on 0.5 yards of binding fabric. Cut strips 2.5" wide on the straight grain and join them end-to-end.
