Here's how to care for your quilting cotton — both before you cut and after the quilt is finished — so it stays beautiful for years.
Step 1: Pre-Wash Before You Cut
Pre-washing is one of the most debated topics in quilting, but for most projects we recommend it. Here's why:
- Shrinkage: Quilting cotton can shrink 2–3% in the first wash. Pre-washing prevents your finished quilt from puckering or distorting later.
- Color bleeding: Deep reds, navies, and blacks are the most likely to bleed. Washing them separately before cutting protects your lighter fabrics.
- Sizing removal: New fabric often has a stiff finish (called sizing) that can affect how it handles. Pre-washing gives you a truer feel for the fabric.
How to pre-wash: Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low or hang to dry. Press with a warm iron before cutting.
Washing a Finished Quilt
Once your quilt is complete, washing it is straightforward — just follow these guidelines:
- Use cold water to prevent shrinkage and color fading.
- Choose a gentle cycle to protect the seams and batting.
- Use a mild detergent formulated for quilts or delicates. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners, which can break down cotton fibers over time.
- Wash alone or with similar colors for the first few washes.
Drying Your Quilt
- Tumble dry on low heat. High heat can cause shrinkage and stress the seams.
- Remove while slightly damp and lay flat or hang to finish drying — this helps prevent wrinkles.
- For large quilts, a commercial dryer at a laundromat gives the quilt more room to tumble evenly.
- Adding a couple of clean tennis balls to the dryer helps fluff the batting and prevent clumping.
Storing Quilts
- Store quilts in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which fades fabric over time.
- Avoid plastic bags or bins, which trap moisture. Use a cotton pillowcase or acid-free box instead.
- Refold stored quilts every few months along different lines to prevent permanent creases.
Spot Cleaning
For small stains, treat promptly with a mild soap and cold water. Blot — don't rub — to avoid spreading the stain or distorting the fabric. Let air dry completely before folding or storing.
